| Abstract | Three weeks after the February 14, 2018, shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where 17 people were killed and 17 more injured, the Florida state legislature passed a bill, which among other things, designated two new roles for each school district: a director of safe schools and a mental health coordinator. These new positions reflect two distinct ways of handling potential violence in schools, one from the outside in (school safety) and the other from the inside out (mental health). Mental health interventions are designed to improve the "internal" psychological world of students so they are less apt to engage in violence and better able to handle the stress that accompanies incidents of trauma. Such interventions include self-regulation strategies like developing a growth mindset, creating better nutrition habits, engaging in physical exercise, and participating in emotional-intelligence activities that help students identify their moment-to-moment emotional states and establish ways to safely manage feelings when they are at or near the boiling point.
